“Notch”, also known as Markus Persson, the legendary creator of Minecraft, has fuelled the gaming world with excitement after announcing a new project. Since selling Mojang and Minecraft to Microsoft in 2014 for a staggering $2.5 billion, Notch has largely taken a step back from game development, only to come back with a surprise.

To start off 2025, Notch took to X to gauge the interest of his followers about two potential game concepts, a traditional rougelike dungeon crawler and a spiritual successor to Minecraft. With over 250,000 responses, guess what the likely outcome was? The “Minecraft 2” concept won with 78% of the poll share. This confirmed one thing - fans want a second drop of the incredible game.

Soon after the poll, Notch teased us all again, saying, "I basically announced Minecraft 2,".

At this point, the theories about the new Notch game were at an all time high, ranging from an entirely new sandbox universe to a deeper, more intricate take on Minecraft’s gameplay, with modern graphics, enhanced world building or even a more narrative driven gameplay. Speculation about Notch's game included ideas like using advanced AI to make NPCs and mobs smarter, or creating infinite dimensions with endless portals to different worlds.

Days after the announcement, all hopes and dreams came crashing down as Notch made a sharp pivot away from the potential Minecraft 2 project. He instead announced that his focus will be on creating the traditional roguelike game, Levers and Chests. The reasoning? Notch said that spiritual successors often turn into “sad nostalgia dumps” and that he’d rather create something fresh and fun rather than try to recapture the magic that made Minecraft.

Levers and Chests looks to be a turn based old school roguelike game, presented in the format of a first person party based dungeon crawler - think original DOOM on MS-DOS.  Since, Notch has sprinkled a few breadcrumbs here and there, one even showing off a screenshot of ‘Jess,’ a Human Warrior, with icons, categories, an attribute list and flavor texts, all of which are not yet final.
